Sino-Russian Media Partnership Strengthens Ahead of BRICS Summit
"This year marks the milestone of the 75th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic relationship," Science and Technology Daily (S&T Daily) President Zhang Biyong told a nine-member media delegation from Russia's Volga federal district who visited S&T Daily on August 13.
Zhang said that with scientific and technological cooperation and deepening exchanges between China and Russia, media exchanges between the two countries and the Russian delegation's visit would strengthen bilateral media cooperation.
In May 2024, China and Russia issued a joint statement on deepening China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. The statement said the two countries will strengthen media exchanges, promote mutual visits at all levels, support pragmatic professional dialogue, and engage in high-quality content cooperation.
They will also explore the potential for cooperation in new media and new technologies in mass media, report on major global events, and disseminate accurate information in the international public opinion arena.
"The visit (by the Russian delegation) is not only a response to the advocacy of the joint statement but also a positive practice of strengthening exchanges between the media of the two countries," Zhang said.
Konstantin Lange, editor-in-chief of The Samara Observer, a Russian newspaper, who had come to China 20 years ago, said he was amazed by the rapid development and the improvement in people’s well-being.
"This could not have happened without China's scientific and technological progress," he commented. "China is no longer the world's factory, but an influential world high-tech center."
Xu Zhilong, editor-in-chief of S&T Daily, said as a leading sci-tech media organization, S&T Daily covers innovations, promotes science literacy, and facilitates international sci-tech exchanges. "In recent years, S&T Daily has promoted the integration of media operations and engaged in international science and technology communication, resulting in growing influence, both domestically and internationally," he said.
Alexei Vladimirovich Shishov, general manager of the Ulyanovsk Pravda newspaper, said the era of multimedia coverage presents new opportunities and challenges. Emerging technologies like mobile Internet and big data offer exciting possibilities for enhanced cooperation between the two media.
The 2024 BRICS Summit will be held in Kazan, Russia, in October, where there will be greater interaction between the BRICS members. Wang Junming, an S&T Daily editorial board member, hoped the media delegation’s visit would serve as a catalyst for more robust coverage of the summit and further cooperation through the International Union for Science and Technology Communication initiated by S&T Daily in 2018.
The visitors toured S&T Daily's broadcasting van and virtual studio for insights into its multi-media coverage. Both parties agreed to collaborate closely on the upcoming BRICS Summit and deepen their media cooperation.
